Habitat - Indoor :: Filter for 90 gallon..

im planning to get a 90 gallon tank from glasscages. im going to fill the water up to 3/4 of the tank. i don't know what filter to get. i was thinking about a power filter that filters 90 gallons, but im not sure it will work with the water filled up 3/4 of the tank. i think it only works if the water is filled all the way to the top where the tube can reach the water.

so does anyone what kind of filter i should get that would work if the water in the 90 gallon tank was only 3/4 filled? thanks

also i dont think i can get a canister filter because its pretty costly i think and i dont think my dad will get me one after spending money on a whole new tank and stand.

If you have four turtles like your avatar suggests, I'd say your best bet is a canister filter.

Agree. There's no other type of filter that's going to be able to handle the waste load from 4 turtles. Better start saving your allowance. Or....Christmas is right around the corner. Maybe a nice big canister filter is on your list?

I suppose you already know this - but, even if your turtles are small now they are going to keep growing and growing, and eventually your 90 gallon tank and canister filter will be just the right size for one female turtle. The other three are going to need other accomodations.

if ur fillin it up 3/4 of the way, thats 67.5 gallons ur gonna need sumthin like a rena XP3, its about 175$ but you can always find em cheap on ebay or craigslist.

I don't know of any filter that would be effective in a 90 gallon tank but a canister. Maybe someone else does.

Price-wise if you bought adequate filtration for a tank that size, it would be expensive no matter how you did it.
You could buy a slew of fluval 4+es which are for 57 gallons of water, and you'd need probably 3 at least. They run $40-50 each so that's the same if not more expensive than a canister, and it won't be as effective and will take up swimming space.

I really think your best investment filter-wise would be a canister. There may be some good holiday sales going on now... keep your eyes out for one.

just one more question, for canister filters, do you have to change the filter thingy frequently like you do for power filters, or does it really just clean itself?

Well no filter will clean itself, but they generally require a lot less frequent cleaning. They usually have baskets for different filter media and bio media, and some kind of mechanical filtration, usually foam pads. About once a month i take mine apart, rinse out the bio media in water from the tank, get the gunk out of the pads, and replace the carbon. It takes about 15 minutes, it's not bad at all.
