Habitat - Indoor :: cork bark

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I have some questions about cork bark! Moxie's basking dock is a little small for her, unless she's smack in the center of it it sinks too much and her plastron gets wet, so I'm thinking about upgrading. I've heard that cork bark is very buoyant, I was wondering if anyone would know whether it's more buoyant than a zoomed dock. And also if it's enough cheaper than a new dock to be worthwhile. But I was thinking of getting a chunk of it and drilling holes to put it on the frame from Moxie's old zoomed dock. What do you think? Is it worth it, or would a bigger zoomed dock be cheaper and easier?

An upper basking area would work nicely if you had the time to build it or the skills for it. Then you wouldn't have to keep upgrading the docks. What size dock do you have right now?
3 turtles,
3 cats,
& fish.

The bark will float too much for Moxie to get a grip. Most people have it wedged across the tank so one end can be submerged. Maybe you can devise some sort of ramp... the bark from black jungle is very thick, so maybe something can be fastened to it.

Here's that link for a place where you can get cork bark:

Spot uses cork bark in his outside pond and I was really impressed with how natural it was for him to climb up on it and bask. It was like he'd been looking for a log and was relieved to have finally found one. I think in the wild they usually bask on logs. He's got an acrylic dock now in his inside aquarium but when I replace it I think I'm going to try cork bark. If you can figure out some clever way to fix it so it won't float around and the turtle can climb up on it, then be sure and share! :D

Alternativley you could do what I did (but recently replaced because I wanted to build an "out of tank" basking area)...

What I did was get a nice tubular peice of drift wood. Then I bought 4 large suction cups, drilled holes into the drift wood and attached the suction cups to it with zip ties.

Look really natural, loved it.
