In only about a week ive noticed my RES is recognizing when i open the lid that something "good" is happening and always approaches me...hes almost too friendly...stops basking when i come into a room, and comes toward the side of the glass im at ,waiting to be fed..So ive started to hand feed him...is this bad? Should he not be dependent of the hand for food in case some minnows are in there...Would he be less likely to go after them if i kept hand feeding them ? ( hell i would ! )

Thanks...Btw buying XP3 tomorrow!!! Im really excited...I was going to order one from one of the recommended sites online but i just dont think i want to wait for it to get here...I want my little guy pimping ASAP!!

Congrats on getting the xp3! And hand feeding is nice for your turtle to get to know you better. I think he would still go after minnows in the tank, I dont think it would really effect your turtle if you hand fed him or not.

We've hand fed my son's map hatchling from the start, and the first time we put feeders in there he went NUTS!!!! Ate 2 nearly as long as him before we could get the rest out to prevent gorging.

I also hand feed Liza who lives in our pond & is about 9" long. She begs for food whenever she sees anyone pass by, but I also see her eating hyacinth & lettuce roots (grow in the water) as well as alge from the waterfall & minnows.

Don't worry - I enjoy hand feeding & so do my turtles.
