Habitat - Indoor :: live with other fish?

Alright so i got my 40 gallon tank and my two turtles that ive had for roughly half a year are getting along great. id like to add to the aquariums settings though, make it a little less dull, my question is this, are there any smaller types of fish that i can get to live in there that they wont eat? I had a beta in there, and they nipped at it a bit but when i tapped on the glass they left it alone, the beta lasted about a week before monster got him. any suggested fish?

Truthfully, there isn't a fish that you can add that will not get eaten. If your turtles want to eat a fish, and there'a fish present, there is nothing that will stop them.
If you want to add to your tank why not get a nice background and some fake plants.
Take a look around the photo section, a lot of people have done some very pretty tank decorating.

Yup, what meg said. Add a background to the bottom, add a couple of fake plastic plants and maybe a few rocks and it'll look way more interesting.

I got some cheap feeder fish (.08 cents each) that are VERY pretty. Some have fantails, some have vivid blue & green coloring, some polka-dotted & yellow, etc. If you look around you'll find some very pretty feeders. Then I put them in the tank. Two were eaten immediately, but the other dozen or so have lasted about a week. I'll replace them as needed. They do make the tank prettier.

Of course, some turtles are better at catching fish than our hatchling....
You may need to rely on 'props' as already suggested.

I've had guppies, rosie red minnows, and 3 snails in my tank with my 3 turtles for over a month. I bought them so the boys would have live food, however they've become pets since the boys have no interest in them. I guess it depends on the turtles and the size of your tank.

Get a Tinfoil Barb. I got 2 of them, they're way to quick for my turtles to catch.

Any other fish my turtles just gobble up.

i've had my turtles live with 2 plecos (the cheap, ordinary ones) before. they dotn seem to be disturbing the plecs.

but plecos are bottom-dwelling fishes, not sure how well they'll decorate your aquarium.

alright, thanks for the replys i will be adding for sure by some plants, i like the idea of a couple snails, and yes ill try both the pleco and a tinfoil barb, Im going to have to get some more hiding places for the fish.

I do NOT recommend snails.

I had 2 snails in my tank with my turtles, it was a slow torturous death for them over a few days. They would hide in there shells, and my turtles ended up biting their shell apart around the hole killing them.

Keep in mind that ANYTHING that you add to the tank will most likely get eaten. It's mostly a matter of when not if. If a certain fish worked in one tank that was lucky, but it's no guarantee that your turtle will be equally inept at catching that fish.
I personally think tiny fish are the best to add to the tank, simply because when they do get eaten at least it's quick for them. I've heard horror stories about plecos being eaten bit by bit and I don't think that's fair to the fish, knowing that you're putting him in a slow a painful situation like that.

anything placed in an aquarium with a turtle can get eaten, so I'd go for something that has a chance - hopefully you'll have success with some of what's in the list. I have a chinese algae eater, it's great and is too quick and alert for my 2 RES to nibble on (so far)

I have a bunch of rosie reds as feeders but since my turtle is small he hasn't eaten many of them and some have gotten quite big. I also have 3 tiger barbs that are way too fast for him to catch and they're fun to watch. The only thing about tiger barbs is that they're aggressive so if you don't have at least 3 to 5 of them, they'll harrass everything else in the tank. In the beginning I only had one and it was always nipping at the turtle's toes. Now the barbs are too busy fighting with each other to worry about the turtle or minnows.

However, once I'm able to I'm going to put the barbs in their own tank so I don't have to worry about them being eaten.

alright, ill head your advice of no snails, i think for now im going to just try putting a few plants in there, and will start getting a few feeder fish that look nice. thanks for all the posts.

This goldfish had been in the tank from Oct. 2005 until Oct. 2007 and one morning it was just a floating head.

I put some rosie red minnows in with my turtle and she ate them right away! they are laying on the bottom of them tank lol.
