Habitat - Indoor :: 100 gal stock tank and filter advice

So I just got a 100 gallon stock tank and a Filstar xP4. I set it up on a couple of cinder blocks to elevate it.




I've been having some trouble with the circulation of the water. After setting everything up, I noticed that there's debris that gathers at the bottom of the tank.


That's whats left of her cuttlebone at the bottom. She doesn't really like them. She just bites them into small pieces then spits it out.

I'm not sure how I should alter my setup so that all of the water is circulating. I have an exo terra repti flo 250 pump that is helping a bit with that, but it still just gathers at the bottom.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. =)

It's not completely realistic to expect that a filter would be able to pick up all of the debris. Trying to get the most water circulation and surface agitation would help the filter the most. The spray bar should help more than the nozzle. I'm using a Fluval 4 Plus which is not the greatest filter, but I had a hard time maintaining an XP3 for it.

I'd also trim the tubes a bit as instructed in the Filstar manual.

What are you using for the basking area?

you could try putting some kinda of air equipment in there in addition to the pump you have and the filter, just to get the water on the bottom of the tank moving. but i agree realistically its not going to be spotless, the debris will go away when you do water changes etc. (hopefully).

Yeah, I was looking at it earlier and thought to myself that the tube probably shouldn't be looping like that. I'll try and get to that in the morning.

But yeah, I'm definitely going to be getting some bubbles in there. Especially after reading how she's probably going to end up loving it.

Right now I'm using one of those floating logs as a basking area. I have it held to the corner of the tank so it doesn't float around. So far it's kept its place under the lamp.
But I do plan to build something out of pvc sometime in the future.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm using one of those mercury bulbs.

Is there any air in the filter? In the second pic it looks like there is air trapped in the filter.

Don't know if you want to spend the $, and you might have to adjust the lip of the tank (or where the filter hangs), but an AquaClear 110 would help with circulation problems. No filter picks up all the debris from the bottom (get out the net).

Yeah, there was air in it. I turned it off and waited for it to let itself out, or so the instructions say you should. I need to get a longer net. Either that or keep getting my entire arm wet rather than just my hands.

You could look into getting some air stones for the parts of water that don't circulate, they work really well for my 55 gal and turts love the bubbles
