They mate in the water.

A tortoise will mate on land. A RES mates in water.

Here's a link on the subject in general:

http://www.redearslider.com/reproduction.html

A female turtle will lay eggs even if there's no male present - they're like chickens this way. However, without a male the eggs won't be fertile.

If a turtle lays eggs, whether they are fertile or not, the eggs should be destroyed. There's a huge overpopulation of RES and it's not responsible to bring still more of them into the world if you can help it.

Didn't one of your turtles lay eggs just recently? Is one of your turtles male and one female?

Send the eggs to David :) Simply not letting the eggs incubate will destroy them and the garbage is a fine place to put it.

what if your turtles eat them??....i asked this a while ago as one or both of mine have started laying this year, but no one ever responded....i'm assuming it's okay as they are still swimming away, but is there anything really bad about them eating their own eggs??....isn't it just extra protein, calcium and fat??...not that mine need extra anything, little fatties....

Eggs are healthy. Like you mentioned, mostly protein, nutrients and some calcium. :)

Sheba ate some of the eggs she laid in the water many yrs ago. It doesn't hurt them. It's not any worse than when turtles eat their own poop! LOL
