General Care Discussion :: New Turtle Question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hello everyone, I just adopted two RES and even though i have wanted turtles all my life (thank you Ninja Turtles) i really dont know much about taking care of them. I have learned alot from this site, but i still have some questions.

The bigger turtle is about 5in long and the smaller one is about 4. We dont know for sure how old they are, but we think they are about a year old. I have them in a 29 gallon tank that was given to me, i know this is small for 2 turtles, i do plan to upgrade to a 75+ gallon tank when i have the money.

The questions i have are: How do i tell if they are male or female? Should i worry about the larger one hogging all the food (the little one is on the thin side)? What do RES like other than the turtle food i have, are there things to give them as a treat? and is there anything i can tell about them by the color of their shell? The little ones is brownish at the top while the bigger one is a good green color. EDIT: Another thing ive noticed is that once in a while the little one will go beserk flailing all around as if its trying to get out of the tank, after a little itll settle back down again, whts the deal with that?

Thank you all in advance, heres a picture of my turtles (i havent named them yet, any ideas?) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/ ... urtles.jpg

WELL I have heard just recently that you find out when they are more than 4 inches so you should know now or soon. The boys have longer nails like freddie cruger nails and longer tails. Look in the photo galeery at PEANUT and check out his nails. You can definately tell he is a boy. Mine are only 3.5 inches long so I am anxious to know what they are I gave them unisex names one River one Chubbs. There shells differ in color sometimes. For feeding you may want to seperate them at feeding time to insure the smaller/thinner one gets enough food. I would actually take the big one out since he is not too much to worry about eating and remain feeding the thinner one in the tank so she/he doesn't get scared. Go to www.petturtle.htmlplanet.com/feeding_suggesteddiet.html There is a huge list of food. Good luck.
