General Care Discussion :: Eating Fake Lillie Pad

I just brought home some fake lillie pads. I put one in the pond and went to get the other one. Came back and fluffy was biting down on it as hard as she could! I had to pull it out of her mouth! There are jaw marks on it. Sigh. What can I do to give her shade and cover in the pond outside?

My guess is that she will figure it out quick enough that they can't be eaten. When I first put fake plants in my tank the turts tried to eat them. Just make sure there isn't any small pieces that could come off.

I agree, as long as they aren't eating it it's fine. Just biting on it, letting out their anger is okay. missibssu almost 2000 posts there

I thought it was funny that you mentioned letting anger out...why's the turtle mad?:)

LOL Mad? Ha ha! Maybe teething? I guess I can put the leaves back in.

Ralph knows full well that his fake plants aren't edible, but that doesn't stop him from chewing on them a bit Boredom perhaps? Or maybe he likes chewing on them like we chew gum?

Both of my turtles tried to eat the fake plants when I first put them in the tank. It didn't take long for them to realize that they were fake. Now they never try to eat them. So as long as thier not biting chunks off, they should be fine. They'll soon realize that thier not meant to be eatten and leave them alone.

P.S. Where did you get your fake lilly pads? I've been looking for some.

I had those 'fabric' fake plants, and Gandalf would shred them string by string. When I noticed this, I removed them and replaced with plastic. He tried doing it with those, and when he couldn't, he started shoving them around his tank. Cracks me up.
