How big is your turtle? if it is not 4 to 4-1/2 inches, then if it is a he, may display his penis to you- this is called fanning I believe... that is the only way I know to see it (when he wants to show it)

I read fanning is what males do with their front feet and claws in front of a female's face, or what he believes to be a possible mate, because mine does it to me sometimes when I approach his aquarium. He puts his front feet out turned sideways in front of his face and wiggles his claws. Also, it's my understanding that the claw length and the tail length and width are the only ways to determine the gender. The male's bodily function hole (forgot the term) is closer to the tip of the tail than a female's. Hope that helped!

No, fanning is when the male exposes himself. When a male brings his front paws in front of the female and waves them, he is fluttering.

Thanks, marisa. I had a feeling I messed those terms up.

It's hard to describe... it's large, dark and some people have described it as mushroom shaped. People sometimes ask "What the heck was that???"

My turtle is doing this "fluttering" thing. Does this mean he is a male?

He's only 2 inches long!

Not necessarily. They can start doing it when quite young, and females can do it as well as males. What is your turtle fluttering at?

He is fluttering at a wind-up music box I put against the glass of his tank.

And once he fluttered at a nerf dart I stuck to the tank.

This is the only pic I can find. It's a tortoise but it's similar to what a res' penis would look like
