General Care Discussion :: White spot on top shell

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have a 16 year old male red ear slider. For a bout a month and a half he has a white spot. I took him to the local vet which didnt't know much about turtles, even though they said they did when I called. The vet sent pictures to this expert. He said I should use Silver Sulfadiazine. Which I have used 2 times a day for 2 weeks, and I take him out all night until the morning. The spot seems to have increased slightly even with the cream. He had a couple of other smaller spots, but the have healed perfectly. Should I be using Iodine besides the cream? Any suggestions would be helpful. The spot is hard, and he is very active and eats normally. I am sending a picture so you can see what I am talking about. Thank you.

Hi Mike, welcome to the site! I think it looks like a small breach in the shell, though not quite deep enough to get to a "boney" layer. You'll need to keep an eye on it as getting bigger is not good. And you'd actually want to see a small bone layer because that will come off and he'll bleed a little but develop scar tissue to heal that area.

What else can I do besides the Silver Sulfadiazine?

I don't think Silver Sulfadiazine will do much here, it might just take some time and resolve itself. If it does get bigger, then you might need a vet to debride part of that area.
