Ive had two RES for 16 years now from chinatown and theyve grown up and into playful and attentive pets. they love eating from my hand and the female has eggs every year at a nearby silty garden patch. There have been times over the years where they will bite each other. Years ago this happened and they were small enough at the time to separate in the tank with a plexiglass wall. Then there was a relative calm between them for years and now they are pretty big and the momma bites the other hard and frequently. My tank is 100 gallons but I think it's too small. They are each about 12 inches long so I know they need more space. Problem is, that I dont have the space in my apartment. Im not sure what to do but I definitely see their situation as inhumane at this point. I would love some day to have a house with a big pond for them, but Im not sure when that dream will happen for me as housing prices in my area are beyond what I can afford.
Im thinking of releasing them into the wild. I know that there are varying opinions on this and methods for doing so like timing the release for spring.... I guess Im just looking for a good place to release them, or a way to keep them from fighting. I want them to have interesting lives and right now their situation just seems sad to me....
What should I do?
