General Care Discussion :: Shell Health

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I'm worried about my 4 year old RES. He's adopted and his name is Atticus. He came to me 6 inches long with pyramiding and the edges of his shell were curled down. He also appeared to have what she described as shell rot. I quickly upgraded his 10 gallon tank to a 30 and within 2 weeks his shape normalized. He still has some curling on the edges and his shell looks much better but I'm not sure what normal is.

He eats everyother day with occasional snacks of fish and dark greens. He basks and swims happily all the time. I'm really concerned that its bacterial infection and if so i need to yank my new 10 month old rio grande RES out of his tank before she's infected too.

Initial reaction is that it might be fungus, but it looks mostly like irregular shedding. I don't see any pyramiding and he'll look great after a couple of sheds. Maybe some clearer pics might change my mind, but those are my thoughts for now.

It is contagious to other turtles, so they will both likely get it if not treated. Primarily it's not harmful but it can lead to other, more serious secondary infections.

Well he is in better conditions than before and is getting better on his own a little. I have some shell treatment the previous owner gave me.

I have a 10 month in there that wouldn't bask and barely eat for a week before i put them together. I'm going to have to separate them again and I'm worried she's already infected and will stop basking again. :-(

A male should also be kept apart, they just become too aggressive.

He actually stopped doing the mating / dominance dance since I put her in there. He's actually friendlier too and letting guests pet him. She's super submissive though. It may also be because i take her out everyday to feed her. Monkey see, monkey kind of interested? Idk
