General Care Discussion :: Going on a trip...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

In a couple weeks, I'm going on a trip out of state for 9 days. Will only lettuce be ok for this long? I'm unsure if I'll hire a pet sitter or a neighbor to feed my two RES, as it's probably a lot of work to have them catch the turtles, put them in the feeding container, measure out the pellets, and feed them, wait, them put them back in the 8 ft pool.

Do your turtles swim up to you and beg for food? If so, then I would just sprinkle in some pellets. Lettuce should be fine, I would just make sure both get something to eat during this time and that they are not overfed.

They aren't beggars normally. They're both skittish, which makes coralling them for normal feeding a bit of a task.

Do they both go after lettuce when they know it's there?

I only know that it gets eaten. Whether it's both of them or one of them, I don't know. They'll eat about 2 full green lettuce leaves a day, if that helps.

It doesn't sound much. Do you offer it around the same time each day? They will anticipate it if it's done regularly.

No. My work schedule varies day to day.

The sitter/neighbor might be able to do it during the same time of day regularly... that's the best chance to get them to know to look for it.
