First let me tell you all that this is not my turtle. I moved into a place recently and in the backyard was a RES in a glass terrarium. The turtle is not full sized yet but it's also not a baby. There is nothing in the terrarium but a place for the turtle to sit on above water. No filter, nothing. The owner is the brother of a roommate and before I arrived the turtle was sitting in dirty water for months. I have been trying to do my best to take care of it, feed it and clean the water but I have other responsibilities that I have to deal and I can't invest the time or money into keeping it. I have injury which prevents me from lifting the terrarium safely on a regular basis and changing the water every few days.
This morning I noticed a small white spot on it's shell and I'm not sure if it's fungus or "scute" or what, but I know I don't have the money to bring it to the vet and I have tried to get my roommate to talk to her brother and find a place for this RES. I don't want to keep asking and make a big deal out of it but now I'm concerned this will just get worse and by the time the brother actually gets it, it will be too sick and too costly for him to want to keep and take care of. I just want a good home for this little guy ASAP. Where I live there is a terrible drought and he actually escaped from the yard. I thought he was dead after a week or so but three months later he came back and seems/ed fine. I don't know how he survived. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.
These pics were taken with the white spots I have taken this morning. He would be shy and his head would recoil when I picked him up. Now he hisses and his mouth is wide open. Doesn't seem like a good sign. I do know that if I was floating around in "dirty" water for months and months despite some kindness recently I wouldn't be in a good mood.
