Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and new to owning turtles and I just have a few questions. I recently got two baby red ear sliders (less than 6 months old) and I have determined that one is female and one is male (one has a noticeably larger shell, shorter claws and shorter tail than the other). For now I have them in a 30 gallon tank with a basking area, filter, and water heater. I have been handling semi-often (when I clean their tank or just want to let them out of their tank for a while). I'm a newbie so I have some questions that I hope someone can help me with!

First, I have been feeding them pellets, and occasionally dried mini shrimp or krill as a treat. I have tried feeding them kale, banana and apple, they did not seem interested in any so I haven't tried fruits or vegetables again, but I would like to try giving them lettuce or some sort of aquatic plant as I know that is good for them. Is it okay to feed them only pellets? How many times a day and how much should I be feeding them? Is it worth it to buy guppies or other small fish for them to eat?

Second, for the most part the turtles get a long, but lately I have been noticing the male turtle swimming up to the female and slowing moving his head in to bite her face. She swims away and he usually doesn't follow, but I am wondering why he would do this and if it is something to worry about. It is never when food is around, it is just at random times.

Third, the female is definitely more calm than the male, she is much less nervous to be handled and she swims around but is less neurotic than the male in the tank. He will swim against the glass as fast as he can and he is much more nervous to be handled, just tries to burrow into somewhere dark. Is it abnormal that he swims against/along the glass very quickly? Also, this may be a silly question but it's normal for them to lean upright against the rock in their tank and sleep right?

Fourth (sorry for so many questions), I have a lamp that holds a red heat bulb and a fluorescent bulb (that gives them their UV needs right?), I have been turning both bulbs off at night, is that okay? I figured it was, but I want to make sure that they don't need the heat bulb on over night. They are kept inside and have a water heater (although I think I need to get a bigger one).

Sorry for all the questions, some of them may be silly but I have been wondering and I just want to make sure my turtles are happy and healthy! Thanks so much. :msgreen:

Hi, welcome to the forum! It's early to sex them and most likely one is eating more and outcompeting the other. It's a pretty common situation.

For getting them to eat veggies, it's a bit harder for hatchlings as they are more carnivorous. A few things to try - a veggie clip, aquatic plants or making your own veggie treat (check the jell-o recipe posted on the forum). Try some thinly sliced carrots or cucumbers as well. Pellets are fine, but use a variety of good brands. They should be getting a small amount of pellets per day (www.redearslider.com/pellets.html -- I would even be a little conservative with the amounts outlined). Guppies/minnows are a treat that might survive in your tank. I wouldn't make it a part of the regular diet.

RES usually get along until they start to mature. Once the males are hitting 3 and 4 inches, you need to be ready to separate them. Females usually do OK with other females but not always.

RES can have very different personalities. That's normal. Where they sleep, swim, explore, etc, doesn't really matter but make sure there are no areas where they can get stuck. RES are very curious about their surroundings and have a tendency to squeeze into tight areas (platforms, bars, filter equipment, etc).

Yes, turn on and off both bulbs at the same times. Get a timer strip to make it a bit easier for you.

Thanks so much! That's helpful, I actually just gave them some green leaf lettuce and they seem to be enjoying it!
