General Care Discussion :: Is this normal?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Nov 15, 2014 5:30 pm   Is this normal?

Ok so I have a few turtles but the one I'm asking about is my Baby Chinese Golden Thread. He's had a couple minor problems but is getting better. He lives in a 45 -60 gallon indoor pond with filtration and heater and all that. Water temp is 80. He has all the right baskig lights with UVA and UVB and all that. He's about 2 inches shell length. The problem is that he is NEVER in the water. And it's not that he's basking, it's that he is going to the far corner under all the plants away from the sun. The basking spot is about 90 degrees. And my full grown RES loves it and is normal. Thank you!

Is he being harassed by the RES? Does he still eat and have an appetite? Any swimming issues?

No he is totally fine with the RES. He didn't eat for a couple days which was odd but now he is eating normally. Any ideas?

With the long tail, I'd be cautious about keeping them together. How does he eat? Does he swim to you or do you have to move him into the water.

He actually lost his long tail already while he was in the 10 gallon. (His tail is about a centimetre now) and no. He is never in the water. He's always sleeping out of the water as far away from the light as he can get.

Does he go up there when the light is off?

You might want to separate him and bump up the water temperatures.

I've done that and he still spends all his time as far away from the light ou of water as possible

Does he have any vision problems? What does he do if there's no basking platform? Does the other turtles bask?

Yes the other turtle basks. He goes over to the filter and gets as much out of the water as possible. I've tried lots of different temperatures and no new outcome.

Was he imported or captive bred? Golden Threads love to bask, even more so than RES so as long as he's eating. Maybe bump up the basking temps to see if it draws him under it. Is there room for him?

He was captive bred in Manitoba and shipped to Alberta. I will try to move the light closer. Is there any better foods for him you would suggest? He's about 1.5 inches shell length

They seem to enjoy the same things as RES hatchlings. I don't know if his own tank will make him more comfortable, but you can tailor the basking area so it's smaller and he has more options to go into the water.
