General Care Discussion :: Slider agression.. help!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun May 04, 2014 1:19 pm   Slider agression.. help!

I'm fairly new to the red ear slider. They were given to us by my step son when they were pretty small. After we brought them home they seemed so unhappy so I started reading and learning about them. I quickly realized that we were NOT caring for them right at all. I love all living creatures and this broke my heart. Petsmart here I come.... 80 dollars later I now have to happy, healthy, fast growing, active sliders. YAY! They now are housed in a 10 gal tank with a 20 gal filter system, lights, a basking area and they are thriving. Well I thought they were happy until about a week ago.. One of them started biting at fingers through the glass. At first I thought he was just playing BUT he bit my little boy in the palm of the hand yesterday. It didn't break the skin and my son washed with soap and water immediately afterwards.
Back to the internet I go trying to find out why this turtle is acting so aggressively which brought me here. Can someone please lend me some advise on what I should do now. Thank you soooo much. I love these two little guys and want them to be happy and healthy here in our home.

When they are in water, they associate most things as food. How big are the sliders? If possible, I would return the kit and look at other options... basically you'll get more for your money.

Thank you for your advise... Should I feed them more often? I usually feed a little in morning when I turn lights on, a snack in the afternoon and feed again at night before lights go off. I also give them light treats like veggies and carrots occasionally. As far as their size they are both almost 3 inches from front of shell to rear of shell.

Feeding them more usually does not pacify them. Over feeding will cause serious growth and health issues. How much of these treats are they getting?

Not too much, maybe every other day a little something... I read that too much and they won't eat their food.

It's very easy to overfeed and it's a common mistake. Treats are usually once a month thing. What's the diet like?
