General Care Discussion :: Egg Season Started Early This Year

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

The past three years egg laying season for Miss Penelope was March.
She upped the ante on me.
She started getting active around 9 in the morning the last few days of January. By Feb 1st (last Saturday) she was in-your-face gravid, frantically swimming and splashing.

OK what to do? Now we have a dog, and the dog has a doggie door, and Penelope needs to go to the yard, but can't have the dog nearby = OK. Sorry puppy, into your kennel.

Penelope made a beeline to a palm bush and did a little recon dig (just scratched the surface, really).
When she had enough, she went to the patio. Once she gets there, I'll put her back in the middle of the lawn. If she has more gravid-ing to do, she will wander; if she is done she goes right back to the patio. She was done.
Penelope in the tank; dog out of the kennel - whew!

February 2nd I had some help, so Penelope went in the yard, and the dog wandered in the house (with the doggie door locked).
That was the day the pup decided that she did not like Penelope after all. Bark bark bark the whole time Penelope was outside.
Penelope made her rounds and then back in the tank. Suddenly, Penelope became the pups arch enemy, and the pup knew where she lived. An afternoon of barking and stalking the tank - thank goodness she got over it!.

Feb 3rd was Penelope's big drama day. Right on schedule, at 930 she started swimming frantically. I was in the middle of a meeting, so I figured she could wait 20 minutes. Obviously, Penelope did not agree. She climbed up to her basking area and tried to escape by hanging on to the lip of the canopy and trying to heave herself up.
Meeting cut short; Penelope out to the yard. Another trip around the perimeter of the yard, another sample dig and then done.

The 4th was a repeat of the day before (except I was smart enough not to schedule a meeting at gravid hour).

It rained on the 5th, and Penelope wanted out twice that day (930 and 430p)..hmmm...seems like there may be something to Steve's rain theory :)

The 6th, she stayed on schedule 930 and 430 - a few hours in the yard, a few sample digs and done.

Yesterday, Penelope moved up to 4 hour intervals (930, 130, 430). It was kind of obvious since she continued her escape attempts.

Today - cold and rainy. Penelope did not want me to sleep in so she tried escaping at 730 in the morning. I awoke to sounds of shell smacking back on her dock. OK - nothing like sitting in the rain at 730 am while your turtle checks out every crevice of the yard. After an hour she was done.
However - she was on a major roll today - 2 hour intervals (730, 930, 1130, 130, 345, 520).
Penelope did a nice little dig on her 130 outing. It was not real deep, but she kept herself busy for 30 minutes or so.
I am pooped; Penelope is pooped, her tank looks like a mud pit and the dog is fat from getting treats to distract her while I scooted Penelope outside every other hour.

I am hoping Penelope is wiped out for the day, but just in case I yanked the platform from her basking area so she can't make any more escape attempts tonight (she is getting good - the last attempt she got her feet off the platform).

The good news is she is not straining.
Last year she dug 10 baby holes before finding the perfect spot. I think she is up to 5 or 6 now, so she has not broken any records yet.
I am, however, hoping that she breaks a trend and lays these little eggs all by herself the first time through (not 20 eggs later).

After her behavior today, I am feeling pretty hopeful about tomorrow. :msgreen:

Lol, glad you remembered my theory. I am a bit surprised at all these attempted digs. As soon as my turtle found her spot, she went ahead and didn't stop.

Hope tomorrow goes well!

Two more days; two more digs. No eggs.
I can feel that she has them, so I guess she will keep trying.
After this amount of time I am keeping my eye out for signs of straining.
So far nothing worrisome. I guess I am just impatient.

Is she covering up the nest area or just moving on?

She is just moving on. She went back to one yesterday and dug it a bit deeper. Today, she went back to the very first one and dug it deeper as well. She spends about 30 minutes walking the perimeter of the entire yard, and then picks a spot and digs anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. Today was a 2 hour stint.
Last year she dug one day for like, I want to say 6-8 hours.
When she finally got around to laying the eggs weeks later, she dug for 2 hours, laid the eggs and then spent another hour covering it all up.
I was hoping she just cut corners today, but I could still feel the eggs before putting her back on her tank.

Going on 2 weeks. She ate the other day, but back to no appetite.
I think she has tried on her own long enough.
She is frantic more than calm, and today I see that her tail is getting pink. Very, very faint, but pink is pink.
Time for the vet.
I'll give her this weekend, and then take her in on Tuesday.

What was the diagnosis from the pink last time?

Just an early warning sign of possible straining. If she was getting pink and actually laid eggs within a few days, then no biggie. but with her history, it just puts me on notice. I made an appointment just in case it got worse (easier to cancel an appointment than make one).

She dug a really ' good' nest last night - a real deep, narrow hole. She sat there a good hour or so, and then started to pack the dirt back in. I was almost sure she had laid those eggs, but she up and walked away before everything was covered... no eggs.

Basically, she is done searching for a perfect spot; she is trying to get those suckers out.
She is digging again right now. Time will tell, I guess.

Hope it goes well! Also kind of surprised she wants a new spot. My girl only did it twice, but very close to each other.

Somehow the song "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa came into my head while reading this thread.

Good Luck Penelope -- Push those eggs out -- without straining, of course :)

Dumbork, I love it!
It is a blast from my past :)
I took Penelope to the vet, and we decided to let Penelope continue to try getting those eggs out on her own.
In true Penelope fashion, she continued digging for another week, and then just stopped the madness.
Like last year, she is likely just building up another batch on top of the one she has.
It is crazy!

Turtles are such divas when it comes to laying eggs.

My big 15 year old has a whole pond to her self. She has a 4ft. basking area/nesting box (2ft. of sand) and still chooses to lay her eggs in the water every year.

Oh! I am so glad to here that Penelope isn't the only finicky nester.
My guess is she'll wind up and go through another round in about three weeks.

Post Posted: Fri Apr 18, 2014 7:36 pm   Re: Egg Season Started Early This Year*& She Finally Laid So

She Finally laid them!! Whoo Whoo! Unlike years prior, these actually look like eggs, instead of misshapen gobs.
That little towel these eggs are on is a long as Penelope's carapace and pretty close to how wide she is. The whole point being...where on earth did she store those babies for 2.5 months???

Wow!

I too am trying to picture that many eggs in a turtle that size.

How long did it take to lay that many, once she started?
