Its more of a size issue, but it can be as early as 3-4 years.

Hey Steve does that mean when they get to 4" the possibility of them laying eggs becomes an issue ? I was going to make a tiny dirt area for my two res in the basking area for winter and let them have outside time in the summer so I was just wondering if I have to keep a closer eye out since they will be 4" probably by summer. Lol 4" seems to be the magical number for res.

If one of them is a male, then any mating activity will encourage egg production and laying. I doubt many females kept alone will produce eggs at that size/age.
