Only if you have the ability and resources (another tank, filter, etc) to separate them when necessary. Males will almost always become aggressive as they get older. Females can be aggressive as well. Since they are older, they are much stronger and can seriously hurt or kill one another.

i started out with a three year old female. she looked lonley so i ordered a baby red ear slider off the internet which turned out to be male. they have been together for almost two years now and get alone very well, like best friends. some people say turtles like to be alone, but i think most turtles do like to be around other turtles. I would not put a 1in baby turtle in with a large 8in adult turtle for fear of the little one getting hurt by accident. other than watching out for big size difference, you should be fine, I say go for it.

You could try it but like Steve said be ready to separate them if they dont get along. I have a male map and a female res together. But theyare only 2 years old and not that large yet.
1 Male Mississippi Map/Mississippi
1 Female RES/Slidy.
1 DBT White Concentric Female/ Lucky
1 DBT Male/ Spots
(Housed in the same tank)

300 gallon indoor stock tank, FX6 & FX5 filters. Mega-Ray 100w UVB bulb.
