So there were Rosy Reds that lived with Brixie for the last 3 months just fine. I just moved and refilled the tank with hose water, and kept Brixie out because of having to wait for the chlorine to evaporate. I decided to put the fish in early and they were fine at first. I put them in the tank at about 8 PM last night. This morning, they were all still alive. I just got home from school and they are all dead.

I guess I'm just worried because the fish survived 12 hours through the night but then pop on 12 more and they died. It's had 24 hours to sit and filter, is it okay for me to put Brixie in now?

Do you know if your water source uses chlorine or chloramines for treatment? The chloramine won't dissipate over time.

Neither chlorine nor chloramine is good for a turtle, but chloramines won't necessarily kill a turtle like it will a fish. Generally, I don't like to recommend any water additive to treat chlorine, but since you are probably starting an aquarium nitrogen cycle all over again, you might want to treat one time with something that deals with chlorine/chloramines before adding your turtle.

After that you will probably want to watch your ammonia and nitrite levels until your bacterial colonies reestablish.

After treating the water, you are safe to put your turtle in. If you only have chlorine and not chloramine, you are also safe to add your turtle.

Any idea how I can find out if there is chloramine in the water without going out and buying anything?

Check your city's website. NYC puts out an annual report for water test results, you might be able to find out. But also use some carbon media, that will take care of either.

The filter uses activated carbon but it probably needs new rocks. I've had TOOONS of trouble finding info on my city's water supply, anyone think they can help? I'm currently living in Englewood, CO.

I know a few people will disagree with me, but I would purchase a good water conditioner like Seachem Prime. I've used it for years with no ill effects on fish/turtle.

I dropped her in last night and she's fine today.

fish and turtles require different water qualities, fish do not like any change in water, and turtles can take a lot.
