General Care Discussion :: Random death...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

It's an honest mistake, don't blame yourself. Treat it as a learning experience. Also, snappers are very expensive in terms of feeding and enclosure size, so you may want to hold off on any big purchases like that. Take advantage of this time to make your other turtle setups as nice and healthy as possible.

If it were 85F and shade was available, then I don't think it was the lack of water.

It had its legs out and blood all over it... even if the temp was higher... shouldn't they be able to tolerate 90 degree weather? seeing as they require basking area with a heat of low 90s?

Parts of my RES can get as hot as 100F when they are basking (according to my temp gun). I would also lean towards a predator or abuser from the info given.

Well if I find the culprit I am either shooting it or decking it. That was my turtle!

If it was a predator, shouldn't have there been more evidence of external wounds? SneakySushie also mentioned that the other turtle was okay (maybe it just played dead). I would also think that its posture after an attack wouldn't necessarily be as spread-eagle like as it sounds. (i.e., as the attack is underway, I would think the turtle would have stayed retracted).

Maybe the other turtle attacked? Maybe an individual was messing with the turtle? There just seems there is a lot of info missing on what happened.

Steve, my turtles also get hot while basking but they can get in the water to cool down. I agree with Jeremiah, if it was an attack of some sort I would think there would be more trauma. Turtles should be supervised or protected by a barrier while outdoors. I'm not sure if a turtle would bleed if it died from heat? If the other turtle attacked wouldn't there be bite marks? A person doing this sounds like the least likely scenario. What was the actual temperature when this happened? Where does Sushie live? I'm not trying to point blame just trying to figure this out.

The high was 90° yesterday if that makes any difference.

Oh, but still I thought they're supposed to tolerate high temps like that?

All I took from this was to provide more shade, and some water...
