General Care Discussion :: Sheldon Ate His Basking Platform Again

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I did call the vet this morning. He seemed more perky this morning - he ate and pooped (the poo was mostly poo and not just basking platform, there was still some pieces but not like the other day). Although he still is turning his nose at his lettuce, the vet said to keep an eye on him and we'd talk tomorrow to see if his mood continues to improve. She took the mood improvement and the actual almost usual excitement about the food to be a good sign. The vet thinks that if by tomorrow when we talk he's still not himself to make an appointment.

I noticed something weird going on this morning - Sheldon's back legs seemed to be spasming. He was fine swimming along and then his stopped and then both of his back legs shot back and forth at once in and out for like ten seconds and then it stopped. He's never done that before. What could be causing that?

I made a vet appointment for 3:15 today. Hopefully she'll be able to help him.

I don't know what caused but it'll probably just be a wait and see approach. I think he'll be fine.

I hope so. Thanks for all your help through this steve. I really appreciate it. Sheldon sure knows how to make his mommy nervous.

Well the visit didn't go as I hoped. Sheldon needed an x-ray and it turns out he ate quite a bit of the basking platform and it's still in his tummy. The vet gave me mineral oil and high fiber meal and if he doesn't improve by Thursday we could be looking at surgery to get rid of it. :(

Spoke with the Vet this morning. We've agreed to give the mineral oil and high fiber meal one more day. If no poop by tomorrow we talk and make some big decisions.

Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear it :( I don't think any turtle has needed surgery from the Zoo Med dock before.

For some reason I didn't get an alert for this post. :(

Sheldon is off of his meds! Yay! He was feeling better around the middle of last week. Then the whole filter gobbledygook happened. Still tonight when he went into the water with his new filter this evening he was happy and hungry. :) Thanks for everything Steve. :)

Whew! - 'Surgery'and 'turtle' are not something we want to hear in the same ssentence.
I am so glad he is back to normal.

Oh yeah. It was a scary window of time there. Luckily, I have an awesome vet and her assistants. :)

Thanks. :)
