General Care Discussion :: Toots has a swollen cheek

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jun 02, 2007 8:29 pm   Toots has a swollen cheek

Today after coming home from work I noticed my Toots has a swollen left cheek. I don't remember Toots having any puffiness this morning during feeding time. Toots seems to be swimming and eating happily but my dearest little turtle has me completely sick with worry. When it comes to my pets, I care more about their health then mine. The swollen bump doesn't feel soft or hard. Why is it that whenever I have a pet crisis its always night time then the next day is a Sunday??? BTW, does Toots look ready to scute?

It look's like an abcess, you will have to take your turtle to a vet asap. Do a search on it for more detail's.

Good luck, :)

Do you think Toots can wait to see the vet on Monday. Darn those Sundays...

Yes, it's an abcess and cureable if treated in time. The vet will need to drain it and give her antibiotics. She'll probably need to stay dry for a few days while it heals. The vet will advise you.

Sometimes turtles just get these ear abcesses. It's not caused by anything you did wrong.

She's a sweet little thing by the way.

The herp specialist can't see Toots until Wednesday morning. He's only there on certain days and thats the only clinic that sees exotics. Toots cheek looks like its getting a little red. I'm so worried, it was hard enought waiting for Monday to come and now I have to wait til Wednesday. I'm so worried that I haven't had an appetite since Toots' been ill. Can my baby wait til Wednesday? I can't stand waiting while Toots suffers.

As long as he still has an appetite, it doesn't really matter. It'll hurt, but as long as he's still acting normal, don't worry about it. Now that you know there's something wrong it probably feels like it'll be forever til Wednesday but he'll be fine.

Compared to other abscesses, this one seems to have developed quickly. Could you look into a different vet?

Cute little guy. Perhaps the swelling had to get to a point before you were able to notice it, or perhaps you just happened to look at him at a certain angle. If he's still eating and active, he should be OK until Wed (but really have it lanced on Wed).

This morning my mother caught my kitty Pearl doing a naughty thing. Everytime Toots popped her little head out of the water...Pearl would bop Toots on the head back under. Pearl balances on the rim of the tank with one paw in the water. I cut her nails all the time but could Toots maybe have been scratched? I can't wait til Wednesday!

It's possible. You need to find a way to keep Pearl away from the turtle. That's like being tormented by a giant bully all the time in your own home. Actually, it's probably worse for the turtle because her instincts are telling her that she is in constant peril of being eaten by that giant predator. That's got to be a lot of stress for her. :(
