General Care Discussion :: RES eating her waste matter.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi

We are new owners (about 4 months) of a 3-4 year old RES. She appears to be in excellent health with a vigorous appetite. Earlier today I was watching her in tank and it looked like she started to consume a freshly produced fecal ball. I have never seen this before. I don't know if she tried and then rejected it or if she actually consumed it. I was too grossed out to completely study what was happening. Is this normal behavior?

Thank you

Gross, natural, and normal!

Try to see if she poops at certain times or after eating. That way you can try to anticipate it and scoop it out before she gets to it.

It'll happen, and it's gross, but it's inevitable. It's not as bad for her as you may think.
