General Care Discussion :: blue eye?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I very recently baught 2 RES from a night market shop without knowing anything about RES. but after a day of research I've set up a decent ish 10gallon set up with basking areas n stuff until the better equipment arrives. Now I've stopped worrying if they'll live another day and started looking at my turtles.

I noticed that one of them has a bluer tint to his/her shell and is a bit larger than my other one. Also, his/her eyes are blue. Is that just like how we human have dif. eye color? or is it like a blue eye cat thing and they have some sort of disability.

oh I've decided on their name, Fish & Chips.

I don't think anything is wrong, like you said it is just a matter of genetics. Interesting find!

I have seen this before. Pretty cool really! I'm not sure if its natural or due to breeding? They breed all kinds of turtles. Like this res.

thanks for the reply~ I remember asking the seller what breed they are but he said he doesn't know. Maybe it got mixed with some other kind. Any idea if it will stay the same color as he/she age?

I think the eye color stays the way it is now, or at least very close. I don't think there's any specific strain(s) associated with eye color, only shell patterns. Certain recessive traits can be bred for in selected lines (that stands for any organism), but I doubt that eye color would be a characteristic of interest to breeders. The point being that recessive traits aren't restricted to certain turtle bloodlines, so even if the seller had an answer for you, it probably wouldn't generalize to the general RES breeding population.

At least, that's my understanding of how it works...However, at the end of the day, :?:.
