General Care Discussion :: is using creek water ok?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi guys,

I'm new here, and I have a basic question, but couldn't find an answer on the forum...

I've been using "creek water" for 2-3 years as a supplement to "spring water" that I get at the grocery store and "tap water" that's been treated with AquaSafe for reptiles.

Is it ok to use creek water? I think that it's got the right kind of bacteria that my turtle needs, but I could be completely wrong about that???

can someone please answer my question, many thanks!!!

I obviously have no knowledge of what kind of state your creek is, but I would say that using it would be risky at best. Anything that was leaked, dumped, or poured upstream of where you go could in all likely hood make it into your tank. I've seen the water tests on our nearby stream, and even that was a little alarming. I live in the country and have an artisan well for our supply that I still will treat with some AquaSafe just for good measure. IMO, the risks don't outweigh the benefits of saving by stretching my Aqua safe a little farther for the month. Hope this helps Todd!

Is the creek water potable? Does it supply your household water?
