It occurs to me that I'm still not sure what gender my turtles are. We thought they were male when we got them because their bellies seemed to dip inwards, but they're very young, so we don't know for sure.

Does anybody have any good tips on this?

Longer nails/tails for males are usually the first indicators. Over time they will stay smaller and have longer noses than females.

Huh, mine both have little tails, but I don't really have a basis for comparison.

Unless they're close to 4" however, it might be too early to tell.

Can any expert help me identify the gender of my 6 month old RES?

They are both nearly 4inches long and pretty much the same size with the only major difference being the cloaca...

Turtle A (fatter/wider and with SLIGHTLY longer front claws)

Top one is a male, bottom one is a female.

If they are only 6 mos old and 4", then you might want to review their diets.

Read online to feed the size of their head but that's so vague.

I feed each turtle 20 pallets per day. Is that a lot?

Yes. Head size, not including neck would the most you should feed. Always feed less pellets if you can.

I would recommend feeding them about 5 pellets and the equivalent of 3 mill worms/crickets each plus lettuce and veggies throughout the week.
This is the same diet I have had my 9 month old RES on for almost three months now and it seems to keep his growing at a steady, healthy pace. Last I measured him he was 3” and vet said he was healthy.
