General Care Discussion :: Head shape or ear abscess?

I was looking at some of the pictures I posted and noticed each of Taro's red stripes is extended out like a lump, which kinda worried me, since I read about sliders having ear abscesses awhile ago:

But then I looked at some other photos posted by others and saw other turtles also have a "lumpy" head. What's the difference between an ear abscess and a normal-shaped head?
