General Care Discussion :: Baby RES, not sure if sick or just loves to sleep :c

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hello all,

I bought a baby RES 11 days ago. I chose it from the tank because it was the most active one. The guy at the pet shop said to feed it about 3 pellets once a day. The pellet brand he sold me is Aquafin Professional.

For the first 2 days or so, it didn't want to eat anything. Its 'home' is a sort of dinky plastic container about 10 inches wide that has a basking area. After about 3 days, it began eating the pellets, which I break in half so it'll be easier to eat.

But now for the past 3 days or so, it refused to eat again. When I last saw it eat, my mom also dropped small pieces of radish leaves inside. I'm not sure if it ate some of the radish leaves. Right now it completely ignores the pellets and tends to sleep a lot. I panicked a couple of days ago because it didn't seem to want to wake up. I thought it might be injured or sick because my brother likes taking it out of its 'home' and lets it walk all over his bed.

So it basically sleeps a lot, or keeps its eyes closed... but when it's awake it's pretty active and thrashes around the small wading area and looks at me when I call its name. When it's asleep, the head doesn't droop or anything and sometimes it stretches its neck and legs out. But I think it sleeps an awful lot :c It'd wake up and then fall asleep/close its eyes again after a few minutes. And I'm really worried that it hasn't eaten for some days now, especially since it used to eat before that. And sometimes it opens its mouth at me then closes it again. When it wakes up sometimes only one eye is open but the other eye opens too. Is my turtle sick?

What's the water temperature? Have you tried any live foods?

I haven't measured it but I always try to keep it to room temperature so maybe around 25-27 degrees Celsius? .__. And no, I haven't tried live foods yet, just the pellets and sometimes bananas... because my family has a RES back home (I'm in another country right now) who eats bananas, so... yeah.

Hatchlings would be more interested in live food and pellets than any veggies. Try give him a soak in water mixed with unflavored Pedialyte (1:1) and break up some pellets for him and leave in the water. Hopefully he drinks some of that in. But definitely try some live foods.

I live in Dubai and while I haven't looked thoroughly at all the pet shops here, I've heard that live food for reptiles aren't sold much. What sort of live foods can I feed a baby RES?

I've transferred him to a bigger tub (because I read online that the small plastic container it was in was usually called a death trap or something) and it SEEMS okay, though still not eating and closes his eyes a lot. I also caught his head drooping sometimes. Just today when I looked at him, I noticed he has sort of small yellowish spots on one hind leg, one front leg and one by its neck. It opens its mouth more often too. Could it be RI/pneumonia? I haven't noticed any mucus though... Although I ought to mention that since we live in Dubai and it's summer right now, we have an air conditioner on often. For a couple of nights it was left out until I had the sense to keep him somewhere warm when we go to sleep. Do you think keeping him away completely from the water might help?

Thank you so much for answering my questions so far. I think of him as my baby even if my parents (I live with them) scoff at the idea. They don't want me to take it to the vet, either.

[ETA] btw what does 1:1 mean?

Live food would preferably be minnows, which are very inexpensive here. A "death bowl" are those small turtle bowls with a plastic palm tree. The spots could be fungus. 1:1 means 1 part water and 1 part solution... (basically 50% water, 50% solution).

That's exactly the bowl he came in with when I bought him. He's not there anymore though.

He seems really weak now and his head is starting to droop. He won't open his eyes anymore either :( I'll buy Pedialyte today.

Sorry to hear it. It's possible that he could have already been sick when you bought him since they are not really kept in the best of conditions.
