General Care Discussion :: Dark Turtle Shell

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:29 pm   Dark Turtle Shell

I have had my turtle for (around) 7 months now, his shell has always been dark. After reading and seeing that this is a potential issue I have grow worried over whether or not my turtle is healthy. (To note Mendicant (the turtles name) is very active and shows no signs of illness). I took a couple of pictures of Mendicants shell and was wondering if you all could help me determine the health, as well as how to bring color to Mendicants shell if it is supposed to be this way. Thank you.

Hi, welcome to the site. Looks like the turtle has been consistently overfed and has grown too quickly. Several indicators are there... lumpy shell, retained scutes, dark scutes and several visible growth rings. I would revaluate Mendicant's diet and make sure you have an appropriate habitat.
