I have an adult female map turtle (was a rescue) that seems to have some kind of mouth rot. She has orange spots in her mouth that I can't really get a photo of. She also has an overgrown beak. We're going to the vet later today, but I wanted to see what people here had to say. I only noticed this the other day. I googled for mouth rot in turtles but all the photos were of yellow/white stuff in the mouth, not orange.
I wondered if this problem could be caused by the water quality problems I've been having lately. My filter seems to be just an expensive piece of crap and can't seem to keep up with the waste the turtles produce. I have to clean the tank every 3-5 days because the water gets smelly/greenish.
What might the cause be for the overgrown beak? Cuttlebone is readily available but I'm not sure who's eating it, as she lived with 3 other females (res and a cooter) up until yesterday. Now she's in her own tank with my smallest female (cooter). The beaks and mouths of the others are all normal/clear.
She is still eating and acting normally with no other signs of illness.
