Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I live in Calgary, Alberta and bought a pair of hatchling turtles in Toronto yesterday. I just came back home today, did some research on RES (yes, I wasn't prepared, at all) and found out that they need a vet. However, I learned from the store I bougt my RES that selling turtles were banned in Alberta. if you know of any specialized vets in Calgary or have any helpful tips on RES, I would really appreciate you posting on this forum about it! Thnx!!! :D :) :o  8) :P   :msgreen:

Welcome to the site. Why do you think they need a vet?

Well, I got my turtles from a guy who didn't even know what the breed was. I suspect it is a RES and the turtles seem pretty healthy, but I want to check for worms and salmonella. It is also for future reference in case either gets sick. Sale of turtles is banned in Calgary (as well as the whole Alberta) so I'm hoping to find one not in the USA.

Thnx, I think this may help. (if my mom will allow me to even keep them. It was my dad's decision to purchase them.)

Close observation of their stool will help rule out worms/parasites. To be honest, I would put money towards a good setup for them with all the necessary requirements if they are healthy now.

As for salmonella, they might all carry it - a vet can't do anything about. Routine water maintenance and basic hygiene should be enough to keep you and your turtles safe.
