I am not sure if I should let them sink/float in the water for my RES to try and eat or place them in 'basking' area.

I've tried both but they don't seem to want it.

Could I just have picky turts?

probably in the water. turtles need water to swallow. remember that fruit is not recommended to feed to turtles since their digestive system cannot easily handle sugar. blueberries, on the other hand, may help in shedding.

is that all you feed them? how about pellets and romaine/red leaf/green leaf lettuce?

or maybe your turtles are really just picky.

No they get their pellets almost 4 times a week but since they have gotton sick, they appetite is not what is should be.

I haven't tried leaf lettuces yet, only the kale so far.

What's their water temperature like?

Too cold around 50's I have a heater coming in the mail for them. Which should be here in the next couple of days.

it's because they are "sick" what do they have and have you been to a vet?

@CactusJohn5: No, I have not taken them to a Vet. I just figured becuase of their shell issue. Skin, Eyes, and Claws all seem healthy, it's just their shell that is showing sign of not being healthy.

I just got my Heater for my tank but it claims not to use with Water.

Is it is possible to still use it on the side of the tank, not on the bottom? (outside of tank, not in)

Or what is the best heater to use for them? I'm not concerned about price.

Also if you can provide a link to a proper heater that would be greatly appreciated.

I use Jager heaters for every tank larger than 20 gallons.

At least go to a pet store and pick up a cheap one... I wouldn't leave the turtle in cold water.

WOW Get a heater in there! Heaters are rated for tank size. They or at least most will tell you what size tank you really can't get a heater that is too many watts.The more wattage it has the shorter time it will be on to hit a certain temp. In case of heaters bigger is fine and that way when you upgrade tanks you can still use it.I have a 40 gallon I think my heater is 200 or 250 watt like I said you can't get one with to many watts they all have a control for temp not watts.

We use two heaters in our 40 gallon. We got a 200w that covers the entire thing, but we also got a 100w that we keep near where our little Matti likes to curl up and sleep. That works more than fine.

Yeah, water temp is by far the most important thing - it tells them what to do. You're heading into near-hybernation, no wonder they aren't interested in eating!

hello I am new and need tons of advice I got a red on a dog rescue and its the size of a dinner plate. its in a 55 gallon tanl has a basking light and a pump. got it feeder fish and it has pellets now what do I do?

That's a big turtle. Are you sure your ready to keep it! Your for sure going to need a very large tank.You also need a uvb light. when you say pump do you mean filter? You also need a thermometer and water heater.Also feed it red/green leaf lettuce. Does it have a basking area? How much water is in the tank ?You should read all the articles on the home page.
