Ok so Gamera just laid 14 eggs in the bottom of the tub. I took them out with a net and covered them with about 3/4 of an inch of dirt. Will these hatch? Does she need anything? I am not sure if she has been fertilized she came from the pet store. Help!

Wow. That must have been quite a surprise. Were you able to remove the eggs immediately from the water or were they in there for a while? They require are to breath so I'm not sure how long they can survive underwater. It may be better to just discard the eggs anyway since RES's can be very difficult to find good homes for (there are so many out there already).

Gamera will just need a little extra food and some calcium to replenish herself since making and laying eggs can be a lot of work for her.

Bless her heart! Yes, Gamera will need a little TLC.

David's right. It's probably best if the eggs don't come to term. Turtles can lay eggs whether they were fertilized or not, so chances are she wasn't. The eggs are pretty delicate, too. I've heard if they were laid in water they won't develop. Also, they won't develop if there were tipped on their side or upside down.

Yeah, I agree with David to. Just throw the eggs away. It's better for you & for them if they don't hatch.

The eggs have an hour underwater but if you changed the position that the eggs where laid in then they wouldn’t develop properly, my gut says there not fertilized, best thing to do it get rid of them.

Shouldn't you put her in a nesting box just in case she's still retaining some eggs?

Before I heard back from you guys, I carefully removed the eggs from the water and placed them in a bucket of dirt. Then I read your postings and agreed, I got rid of them. It was a tough decision, we are a small rescue but I understand the situation. Thanks for your thoughts.

Depending on how long they were in the water, and if, in removing them with the net, the positions of the eggs were changed, they probably wouldn't have been viable anyway. A lot of eggs from that lady. :)
