Post Posted: Tue Jan 16, 2007 11:21 pm   I think one of my turtles has passed away...

One of them show no signs of life anymore. I put them all into the water from the basking area, and 2 of them stared swimming around in circles, then headed back to the basking area 5 minutes later. The other one, however, just lies there in the water with it's head inside it's shell. When i touch it's legs, it doesn't retract, but remains in the same position. There are no air bubbles floating up towars the surface from his face either...
Should I seperate this turtle and keep it in a tub beside the tank for warmth just in case its still alive? or has it left this world already?

I feel so bad... in just 2 days, I have been the worst provider ever...
They show signs of RI according to some users, 1 has probably left us now, and 1 has a life threatening disease thing and i can't even give him proper medical treatment...

Turn off the UVB light (10.0 compact, yes?), then take them to the vet ASAP.....

I'm not sure how to respond to you, except to tell you your turts need the attention of a herp vet... Perhaps you could find one who could help you with a payment plan.....but they definitely need professional help, something you wont find on this forum.

Sorry this has happened. While we do as "parents" to our turtles, try to give them a good home, and love, I understand completely about not being able to jump right out and spend extra $ on a vet.

I hope all your turtles turn out fine. And if you loose one, I am so sorry.

Do the best you can with what God has blessed you with. You can't ask for anything more. You are doing the best you can.

Glad you found this group of people who have a common interest in turtles.

Let us know how your sick turtle gets.

I'm so sorry to hear it's not going well. I've been following your threads and know that you've been trying very hard to do everything right - and you have been doing everything right. There's no way that in the couple of days you've had them that anything you've done has made them ill. It's something they had when you got them. Like I said in another thread, from time to time we get them from people who haven't done right by them, and then it's often too late to correct the damage as the little ones are pretty delicate. I also know that you don't have a lot of support at home on this and that you're 14 and therefore what you can do is limited.

I would definitely separate them. For the one that seems to have passed, you can keep him in a warm place and maybe he'll revive but don't get your hopes up. For the one that's ill, keep him warm too and in water that's not too deep so he doesn't have to spend energy swimming. The one that seems to be well needs to stay warm too in case he's trying to fight off what the others had.

Another person on here had three and has lost two but the third one is doing well. I hope your luck turns now.

It isn't always like this, you know. Lots of people get healthy ones and have a great experience and have turtle companions for a long time. You've just had some bad luck. I hope it's not too discouraging for you.

By now, if the poor thing is not alive, he will be stiff. Are the eyes open? If so, is there a film covering them?

If you've lost him, I'm sorry. :(

You said yesterday that your dad poured out all the water and replaced it with hot water,if so then that could have triggered something :(.

Im sorry for your loss,kai...try bumping up the water temp to 82 degrees.
I know i have told you this many times, but try and get them a vet..its not too late, you can save them.Talk to a family member whos an animal lover,do everything you can.

his parents can afford it they just think its a waste of money, unlike the initial purchase. right. anyway, no more turtles until you can pay for vet bills. thats my 2 cents. kthx.

This is not something you're going to hear from me often, but you know, I 100% agree with that statement!!! So da sAUCE you might want to mark that on your calendar :)

Yup! Agreed. Here's my recent experiences:

I upgraded my adult turtle's tank to a 90gal custom tank: $900
Basking dock, filter, charcoal, and lighting for the big tank: $120
Bought a python to clean the big tank: $35
Bought a *complete* set-up for my new 1" baby RES: $200
Took my adult turtle to the vet recently for a check up: $42

So....that comes to almost $1300 I just invested in my TWO turtles' care this past 6 months....! Turtles are NOT a cheap hobby.

However, once you INVEST in your turtle's care, the maintenance cost is very low. I upgraded everything this year so that both my turtles will have long, happy lives. My adult RES has been with me (and healthy) for SEVENTEEN years & I am hoping that I can say the same thing about the baby when it grows up too!
Kristin's Pond! Starring:

RES = "Sheba", 21+ yrs. old
African Clawed Frog = "Prog", 10 yrs old
& "Kristin" as Momma

guys, lets not give Kai a hard time here. if he/she 's unable to go to the vet for any reason then we should not push him/her. we should be supportive in anyway we can, and by saying "i would eat ramen noodles for a week and drink tap water if it meant getting my RES to a vet in a time of need" doesn't really help except make Kai feel worse. i just took my turlte to the vet about a few weeks ago, and frankly, i think if a turtle is meant to live then it's meant to live, provided that you give reasonable care. for those of you who think we should take a turtle to the vet despite the financial situation, i would suggest you to think in a rational way. i mean i love my turtle and i would provide her with whatever she needs as long as i am able to, but a turtle is a turtle. they are not en-dangered species. however on another note, for those of you who are considering getting a turtle as a pet, think twice before you actually get one.
