Urgent Care :: RES - shell greying

HI!

I am new to this. Got a RES as a "gift" from family for my 4yo son. I have had him for ~ 1 yr. Just changed his tank to have floating dock and "scutes" filter. Also dipped him in "repti turtle sulfa dip" as recommended by the pet store. He now has UV light. I know a heat lamp is needed, but do not want my son to burn himself. But I have noticed his shell is whitening/greying. No idea of what is happenning. Any advice is welcomed.

Welcome to the forum. Can you post a pic of the shell dry? It's possible he's shedding (has he ever done so?), but a pic would give a better idea of what's going on.

He needs a heat lamp. Just teach your son not to touch the turtle or it's lights, etc.

To get the picture to come up, start with [img]%20copy%20and%20past%20the%20link%20from%20photobucket%20and%20end%20with%20[/img].

However, copying the link shows the picture.

We'll see if this works. I am not savvy with this "url" thing. Do I need to include the whole "http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q78/lilsmokey1971/DSC01759.jpg" b/t the [img' and the [/img]????

Yes you need to include the entire link but rather than using the url link, try it with the img link. With photobucket its actually easier than with other sites. It's easiest to do with 2 windows open: one with this forum and the other with Photobucket where your pictures are.

When in photobucket, click on the link that says "img", highlight the entire link and hit copy. Then paste it onto here. It should automatically put the img into the post.

Anyway, here is your picture. I put it up for you.

That appears to be either a bacterial or fungal infection. I've seen a few of these and if it is still spreading, then you need to get him to a qualified herp vet for an accurate diagnosis (and treatment). Since he is a hatchling, his shell is still soft and developing and this condition could make it difficult for him to grow a proper shell.

Thanks for the help posting my pic! Also - thanks for the info on his shell. I will look for a good herp vet today. This stuff has spread. It started as a few grey spots and now . . . well, you've seen the pic.
