i am new on here, I have read around some and it seems there are many sick babies right now. I currently don't have a RES, but I have rehabed many different types of turtles/tortoises in the past, and I have other herps now. Currently I am helping a family member with a sick baby RES. He is small, 50 cent sized. They have 2 and both were healthy little piggies when they first got them. They were in a small critter keeper type cage, with no heater or proper lighting for about 2-3 months, and one became sick. He went to a vet, and just like a kid he was moving around well and active and the vet said he was fine and gave instructions on temp., lighting, and also gave some meds to worm him. Needless to say he went down hill fast, lost his appetite, eyes swelled shut etc.
I set up a 10 gallon tank with a large reptile filter, heater, basking island, plants, and extra large gravel , lighting etc. for the healthy one, but the sick one seems too weak for that much water etc.
So he was in the smaller cage with a small "pool" of water and lighting above, he has been going outside in this set up for a few hours a day since nothing is as good as real sunlight, The vet wouldn't give any antibiotics for him, so I went with broad spectrum fish antibiotics in his water, changed out every day for 5 days, and the zoo med drops for vitamin A deficiency. His eyes opened and he began eating again, but then within 2 days he was lathargic again.... I went to visit and his water was still too cold. I am thinking maybe since he ate and was too cold, his body can't digest the food and it wore him down again??? So we got a repti heat pad for under the tank, his tank is nice and warm now, and I believe he ate again (no one saw him eat, but the food was gone). He also got soaked in piedialyte a few times too when he wasn't eating this last time. Can anyone give me any other advise? He doesn't seem to have any signs of RI, nothing coming from his nose etc. I am sort of getting to my wits end as far as ideas go.

I hate to say this, but I had to go to a second vet to help my turtles. The first vet didn't give antibiotics, and acted like I was a fruitcake for being so concerned about them. He is listed as a herp vet, but he was totally unconcerned with all the RI symptoms they were displaying. The second vet was super worried, gave me Batril shots to give all three, and still said they only had a 50-50 chance. One of my little turtles died Tuesday, and I blame the first vet.

oh man that is terrible. I really don't think the vet she took them to knew what the hell she was talking about. I have run into the same problems with my parrots. Seems like we have to become our own vets when we have "exotic" pets sometimes.

Welcome. It sounds like you're doing pretty much all you can. (Kudos to you for your efforts.) You said his tank is nice and warm now. What's the temp? I don't know where you're actually located, but unless it was nice and warm and sunny and there were virtually no breezes, I don't know if I'd be taking him outside. But, as you know, he does need UVB rays---does he have a UVB light to bask under?

Does he actually get into the "pool" you made for him or do you have to put him in it to hydrate him? The pedialyte is good for that.

What antibiotics are you using (tetracycline?)

I'm unsure of the time frame for all of this. If you've just got the tank warmer, and you think he's beginning to eat, I'd continue what you're doing. Hopefully time and the added warmth will work in his favor. Sorry, I can't offer more than what you've already been doing. Please let us know how he progresses.

He started getting sick about 3 weeks ago, the vet visit was shortly after that. I am not sure of the exact temp. of his tank (I am not at the house he is at). I think they have a thermometer on him now, I am going to call tonight to see whats new. He ate about a week ago and seemed to be getting better...then downhill again, since the new under the tank heater, he has eaten 1-2 reptomin pellets. What temp should the water be idealy? All this caring for these little guys makes me want on now. LOL Are there any turtle rescues??? I know the Columbus Reptile show sells turtles....but I would rather give one a home that is in need. I am also looking for a Red footed tortoise. :)

oh and on the days he was putside, it was very warm out, and he was on a deck right up by the house so not much breeze. I was using maracyn broad spec. antibiotics.

For a hatchling his size, the temp should be 78F. However, because you believe he is sick, you can up the temp to 82F to give his immune system a boost.

Definitely find another vet! He could be in the early stages of an RI, and IMO NEEDS antibiotics. Also being in cold water doesn't help, of course.
Antibiotics IN THE WATER won't help, especially if they are for fish! Those might do more harm than good, since he is drinking the water he swims in... it could really compromise his digestive system.
