hi i just got my RES a couple of weeks or so ago, and i have heard and read all kinds of opinions about what to keep the basking and water temperatures at. Right now i like to keep the basking area at around 86-88 in the day, and i turn off the heat lamp at night so it stays around 82-84. The water has been around 85. What are all of your opinions? Should i adjust? Also, just a few minutes ago my RES spit a little bit of water out of his mouth while basking, is this normal? Thanks for any input and advice u can give a new owner! []Deace

The temp for hatchlings in the water should be 78 so you may need to cool your water a bit. The basking temp sounds about right though. Not to sure about the spitting out of water though.
my little turtles have been ill and i have had the water temps between 82-84 to boost their immune systems. They are all shedding so much right now that they look like a really white person peeling after a bad sunburn. That is one of the issues with keeping water warmer than 80, excessive shedding. Also you generally want a 10 degree difference between basking and water temp, ie 79 degree water, 89 degree basking platform. Are you sure it was water?
