When Nelly went to the vet, she had a clean bill of health, but the vet noticed her yolk sack was still there. She was born June. 17th of this year and it hasn't gone away. What do I need to do? Is this bad?

Not sure. What did the vet say?

She said it should go away and it wasn't a big deal but if it didn't go away in a few weeks Nelly would need to see her again, which it hasn't gone away...

How long ago did you take her in? I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get inflamed or anything.

Two or three weeks ago, and it's not inflamed ...yet...

Well if the vet said to bring him back, that's what I'd do just to be safe. It should have been absorbed by now.

It should have been absorbed by now, but if a zealous human starts feeding a turtle right away, the body might not absorb the sac. I would go ahead and take her to the vet so he can do whatever is necessary- maybe remove and cauterize it? I've never encountered this before.

How much of the yolk sac is left?

It's as small as a grain of salt...it basically looks like a belly button

It's that small? Don't worry about it then. I was thinking it was the size of a dime or nickel or something.

I have a preemie Eastern Painted that took forever for his egg sac to be totally absorbed, but it finally was. I'd just keep an eye on the area for any abnormal changes. If you see anything that is cause for concern, go back to your vet.
