It could either be shedding skin or fungus. Is it wispy and thin when in the water, but not when he's out?

It sounds like shedding skin. What is his set-up like: tank size, amount of water, heater, filter, basking and water temps, UVA and UVB bulbs? If the water is too warm it can cause excessive shedding. But if you see this occasionally then it's normal.

Thanks for the info. Now that i think about it, I have seen this before. I just didn't know if I should be concerned. Buddy is aprox 8" of shell length. The tank is 30 gal, w about 8 in of water, basking light with basking area in corner, UV light, water filter etc. The temp strip may need replacing. I'm on it.
THANKS AGAIN.

Something else you need to be on is an upgrade! 10 gallons of water per inch. That's 80 gallons! I know that it is your son's turt, and I don't know how long you are caring for it, but it needs to upgraded as soon as possible. He also needs a lot more water, so don't hesitate to fill it up! Just remember to leave enough space that he can't escape. Does he have a place to bask? A basking light won't do much good if he doesn't have a place to get out of the water completely and dry off. Be sure to read through the main site for lots of other info.
