well first off you need uva, uvb and heat lamps...water needs to be about 80 and basking area about 90 and you need to fill the water pretty high so he can swim. without heat, it can be very dangerous for them. For now you can just use a regular bulb and put it above the tank for heat. thats just basics, im sure more people will reply soon enough to help you out more.

You can start by reading through the basic care guide.

definitly place a lamp above the basking area! I have a 10 gallon tank and dont have a water heater b/c my heat lamps keep them hot enough, but i will have to get one when i upgrade in 2 weeks.

well i have a uva/heat lamp and a 5% uvb lamp and no cover to the tank. It will block the uvb rays. So 2 lamps. You can get 1 bulb for all 3 but it isn't recommended for a small tank. You can cook them. And yes there are basic care guides on here that can help you out more than i can.

If you have a PetSmart by you check that out. They had the clip lamps on sale yesterday and i bought a few, also the UVA/B bulbs were marked down from $40 to $20. And like everyone else on here has said, print out what you want from there website and they will match the price since it's cheaper online for most things (my heater was $34 in store and $16 online, and the store gave it to me for $16).

For starters, there are two lights that you need, not three. You need a UVA light, which is just a regular household bulb (60 or 100 watt), and it is to provide heat. Second off, you need a UVB light, 5-10% is good. Like mentioned, it can't be seperated from the basking area by screen or glass because it will filter the UVB rays.

Next you need a basking area. Some place that your turt can come completely out of the water. Most people have zoo med basking docks, or you can build your own using ideas from the photo gallery.

A water heater is recommended if there is any fluxuation of water temp. You water temp should be around 78 for a hatchling and 75 for a turt over one year old. Whatever you do, remove them from the window area...you can fry your turtle that way. Especially if you don't have much water in your tank.

Remember, no pebbles, your turt will eat them. Bigger river rocks are recommended. You mentioned a 10 gallon tank, and I know from experience that you are going to want to upgrade soon. The biggest you can get, the better (It will save on expensive upgrades each inch he grows). The rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch of shell, and that is straight length, not the curve.

You will need a good filter. One that is rated 3 x's the size of the tank. And before purchasing one, think about your nearest upgrade. Turtles are messy, you are going to want one. Cleaning the tank every other day isn't going to be any fun.

There is a recommended food list on the feeding and nutrition topic. Read through that and pick some greens to get started with. Or carrots, mine love those sliced up. There are pellets made specifically for turts, available in many brands. You should feed the amount that would fit in the head, once a day for the first 8 months to year, and then once every other day. Keep fresh veggies available for the turt to eat at other time. He will be a healthy begger in no time, lol. Keep in mind that a turt who is just adjust to a new environment will need a couple of days to adjust and may not eat.

Be sure to read through the main site...it has a lot of benefical information, more than I can tell you right now on this forum. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

The people on this site do not allow posting web based sellers. I happen to agree with that decision. The people who sell them on the web are just as clueless and cruel as the vendors who sell them by the road. When you purchase from them, even if you mean well, you are supporting their business. It just isn't recommended. Also, your turt is going to be expensive and I don't recommend having more than one. I have two, and if I knew everything that I know now, I would only have one. There is a big risk that the two may not get along later in life and they may have to be seperated. That means double the cost of everything...a whole new set up. Give it some serious thought before you purchase another one. Also note that if you do, they will need to be quarantined for a period of time before they can be put together. I'm not sure of the actual time, but someone else I am sure will let you know.

if you are serious about getting another one tho, you could try posting your location and maybe someone lives near you that can tell you where to get some locally

i don't think you should get two unless you are prepared to seperate them in the future if they happen to get aggressive, 2 turtles would mean double the waste in one tank, not to mention the tank would have to be bigger!
