Hello,

My 11 years old female RES is trying to lay her eggs. She is going through her usual process of doing this. Normally I allow her to go outside and she always finds a nice place, although the temperature are far too cold to let her out. She did this similar thing a few years back but it was during the early spring, so she had to wait a week before the temperature were warm enough. I had felt eggs inside of her. Feel like there is at least 5 or 6. In the past I has tried using a basin full of dirt, but she took no interest in it. I am just not sure what to do. Should I wait and see if she lays them in the water or take her to the vet to have her induced?

I would have a container ready and try to induce. If you observe her trying to lay eggs at specific times during the day, try to put her in there at that time.

I've tried that in the past and she just climbs out and scratches the floor. She was always very picky about her place outside as well. She would spend hours looking for the perfect spot.

I was in the same situation a few winters ago. Fortunately she was only carrying a few eggs and eventually expelled them in the water. If you have an experienced herp vet, you might want to induce or consult with them.
