Treating Shell Rot

No it is not for my own turtle, she's perfectly fine. However the turtles in the pet store are not doing so well. I discovered that they had shell rot today while I was trying to sell one to a young boy and his mom. I ended up not selling it to them since it was sick, and there was no way I was going to sell them a sick turtle.

I contacted my local pet store ( a VERY good one too mind you) and asked them if they new of any treatments I could do to help with the shell rot, and I was told to take them out of the water and place them in a dry area, and apply iodine to their shells. Allow it to soak for 15-20 minutes, rinse and replace them.

(Don’t worry about their setup, I pushed my boss to order in some docks and lower the water level some ((for now)) as well as getting in a UVB light, since we have UVA's already, they'll be in by the end of the week, possibly even Monday)

Has anyone had to deal with a problem like this? Any advice?

He also said that if I saw red streaks on the bottom of their shells, that it was probably too late for the turtles :(

I will contact a local herp vet that I found on one of your links (ty for that) tomorrow as well to see what she suggests and before I do anything myself. From what I read, she’s a very good herp doc, and she even does work with some rescued animals and such, and she’s only 15 minutes from my house and 5 from my job! What luck!

Wish me luck and I hope you have some more advice!

I have a RES with some shell rot but very little Im glad I caught it when i did... I took him to the vet and they said to put him in a separate tank where he can stay dry for 18 - 23 hours a day and put him in the water long enough to eat, and relieve himself, after takin him out of the water the vet said to dry his shell off and apply some Betadine or Iodine all over the shell jus to be safe....after about 5 days I can tell a difference allready.
