I will post all the information about my two RES's tomorow after work. Though it is late, I'd like to just get the question I have out on the board. I've noticed some sounds coming from my tank that resemble a mouse "shrieking" so to speak. They are faint, and I live in a basement apt, so i thought it was just that, a mouse in my apartment. However, when I was feeding them today, I noticed the noise was coming from their tank. Everything looks to be normal, and they look as vibrant as ever, eye's open, swimming fine, and eating normally. The only thing I have not done is swap the water in a month. I plan to do that tomorrow.Should I be worried or concerned?

I think we've come across croaking and chirping type noises that were not associated to any illnesses. I'm not sure where shrieking would fall, just keep an eye out for other symptoms.

any in particular that would be associated with that kind of sound? Now that I think about it, "chirping" would be a good way to describe it as well. Im just concerned that it isnt a respiratory type thing. . . should i keep my eye out for anything specific?

No... there is not a lot of info out there. My RES did it a few years ago, while outside. It was a pretty warm day... but there were no other symptoms and has not repeated.

If there are no other signs I wouldnt take it to the vet. If there are more I would. Not everything is known about turtles. They do weird things sometimes. Mine was farted, startled the crap out of me.....pun not intended :)

I just cleaned the tank, which i have not done in a while ( I know its not the greatest thing to let the tank go without a cleaning) The water was a reddish color, though there was no odor or anything else. Rather than a screaming, it sounds like when they come up for air, they are out of breath. also, they have been shedding unlike they have ever shed before. the pieces are almost whole, like an entire square has been shed in one piece. the shells are both hard and do not have any holes or discolorations in them, so im assuming they are fine.

Water being "reddish" is a unusual, is there anything in the tank that might have cause that?

My female RES makes a slight whistling sound when she's breathing heavy.

Not to my knowledge. The tank is basic: Rocks, heater ATBA heat source and filter. other than that i dont know where that color could've came from. i did not clean the tank for maybe one month, possibly longer, and i did notice they have been shedding peices of shell in whole peices, i do not know if that is normal either....

the shrieking and chirping sounds if you are using a hob filter will usually be coming from that. clean out the prop area and this should help. as far as a reddish color what are you feeding is it red? as not doing a wc for a while you water will be dirty and poo and food will be the main issue.

Bowser has squeaked twice since we've had her, both times being when she tried to bite one of us.
Most recently was when we had to (gently) scrub her shell with a soft-bristled toothbrush since she had a bit of algae.
She does NOT like having her shell messed with, so when we put her back in the water she turned around and tried to bite and squeaked when she did. It was pretty cute! She got over the trauma of it all pretty fast once we grabbed her favorite treat. LOL
