I was cleaning out my res tank and let him run the floor. I can not find him and was wondering how long he can be out of the water?

He can be out of the water at least 24 hours, so don't panic yet. Just scour everywhere, and make sure you close off any exits to the outside. RES are fast, so even someone coming in or out a door could release them.

Look under any and all furniture, even if you think your RES is too big or too small to fit. They may also get stuck in tight places, so be ready to have to lift a piece of furniture up to get them. Check under the stove, dishwasher, and washing/drying machines before use if you haven't found him yet. RES can climb, but only to a point. He shouldn't be able to climb on your bookshelf, but a laundry pile is fair game. They could also potentially climb up stairs, esp. if carpeted.

A healthy 4+" RES can go without food for a week and water for several days up to a month (not recommended), though the longer they are out of the water, there may be more severe issues of dehydration.

Baby RES, considerably shorter. Good luck finding him!

I lost my female RES for about 24 hours when she was much smaller and younger. I found her behind the computer under the desk. Now that she is much larger (about 8 inches) she cannot hide under too many places, but she now has her favorite spots where I can find her.
