i dont really know how to tell the difference from the two. i recently got the turtle. i dont know what conditions it was living in before i got it.

there are white flakes that seem to be peeling off.. but there are also some black spots
is the shell rotting? or is it just shedding?

I think it's just shedding. Monitor the black spot though. If the spot grows, it's not
normal I'd think.

Yea it looks like it had shell rot at those black spots but gone now as i can tell they made some pits in the shell. It will heal after a couple sheds

Yes, most likely shedding. I'd also like to point out other than those "pits" you have a very pretty turtle.

Are the black areas soft or have an odor to them?
