I adopted a RES turtle from a local pet store, it had just come back from the vet who said its claws & front paws would eventually disappear. Yesterday one paw was missing nails & now it is degenerating quickly & it has already started on the other paw. Anyone know what this is?? Am I just nursing along a turtle who is going to die soon?

This is something the vet should have told you. What exactly did the vet say? (A reason must have been given for this condition and I'm surprised, from what you wrote, that no treatment was given.)

Actually, it was treated at the vet, given back to the (major chain) pet store & told that it couldn't be resold because it would lose the claw part of both front paws. It was given a Vit A shot. I have it because my boyfriend is an employee of that store & they can take abandoned or unsellable animals after treatment.

Is there any way you can contact the vet that diagnosed him and ask what exactly is wrong and if there are any treatments?

I will be doing that asap, I haven't heard of anything like it. They aren't actually rotting but they are just disintegrating quickly...
