My male RES have gotten his laws ripped of (he got 3 claws left unharmed)
its been a while now and I feel the claws are taking too long time to grow back, and it looks like he still got some wounds.
The vet knows nothing about reptiles. Reptiles in general are a gray zone in Norway and they have a null tolerance of reptiles now, mine where in country before the law change so they are safe and legal as far as I know. But I`m afraid to bring them to the vet for a check-up (The department that handle animals have grown trigger happy) and see if he can help, but then again he knows nothing about reptiles.

So all in all I am wondering how long will a regular healing progress go for lost claws?

Welcome. How did they get ripped off? Are the nail beds injured at all?

I've had a painted get a nail bitten off down to nail bed and it took a really long time (months) for it to grow back. The nail still is a bit shorter than the other ones.

I regards to the claw, make sure that it does not get infected and cause more serious problems. Your turtle may not get it back if it was actually ripped off.

Is the wound healed over or is it still fresh? If it's not yet healed over, get some antibiotic ointment (the kind for humans - around here we get Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment) and put some on the wound. Take him/her out of the tank and dry him off real well, then dab a thin layer of ointment on with a q tip. Then, keep your turtle out of the water for about 10 minutes to let the ointment sink in. Repeat this twice a day until the wound is no longer fresh. Also, keep the water very clean - change it every day if necessary. This will help prevent infection from setting in.

I'm also worried that they have not healed properly. What was the course of treatment? How long ago?

When my male RES lost a few nails, I cleaned the wounds with diluted betadine (with a cotton ball) and applied Neosporin twice a day. He was also dry-docked until the bleeding had stopped.

thank you for your reply`s.
The claws still have the roots intact. There have`nt been really any treatment, except I have cleaned the wound a couple of times.
Its no open wounds, just the claws taking its time growing back.

On a fresh wound I would suggest diluted betadine until it tries to scap over then the antibiotic ointment. I also would suggesst that you dry dock it for a few hours with the ointment on it. That keeps it on and not wash off. Good Luck!!

again thanks for your replys.
MacGyvers claws are coming back, his middle claws are a bit slower than the other so he has a "rock on" look on his claws. his wounds have healed nicely and he seems to be in a better mood as well.

Is MacGyver in with the two females? If so, they likely attacked him and that's why he lost his claws. Males tend to constantly harass females, and as females are larger and stronger when they eventually get tired of this unwanted attention they attack and can easily kill the males. For his own safety you should think about separating them if they aren't already separated.

yes MacGyver is with both of the females.
Lara is the most dominant of them and she can get a bit annoying.

With a few exceptions they do mostly go along good together and don't bother each other much.

But I got the old aquarium as a terrain so I can separate them for a while of they get to rough.
