Hi:

I have a red ear slider which I hatched about 12 years ago. She only has three legs because the fourth was bitten off by her brothers. The brothers are long gone and every summer she stays in our above ground pond with a screen over it so we don't loose her. Today I went out to check on her and she appeared to be stuck to the suction side of the filter. I took her out and it appeared as through she had drowned. But after a few minutes of blowing in her face she came around a little bit. My problem now is that our exotic animal doctor is out until tomorrow on vacation. We called a few other exotic vets about two hours away and they all don't have much to say besides keep her warm.

Here are her symptoms:

She is sitting still and keeps pulling her legs in towards her face. She does not want to eat and keeps closing her eyes. She is not moving around but when I take her out to put her in warm water she does try to fight a little bit. I did notice once that bubbles came out of her nose. She doesn't appear to be very strong. Any suggestions. Will be able to get to doctor tomorrow. I think she must be sick and just went down under water and couldn't come up. I really thought at first that she was drowning but there is no way she was stuck there. Any suggestions please

well she anit very active and until you can see a vet i would lower the water level just incase she cant get up to the surface. keep an extra eye on her and keep her warm.

Well, like the vets said, keep her warm, It sounds like she might have RI, so the vet should be able to tell you more on that subject, there isn't much you can do about RI, she needs to get medication for it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

OK:

Here is what has happened. Like my son said after 12 years I found out the hard way my turtle is a boy.

I put him in warm water and let him sit on my hand for a few minutes then started to feed him baby spinach in a syringe. All of a sudden I found something from the back in my hand. I freaked out and thought it was her intestins. But it was black and pink. Everyone agree this was his boy hood coming out? Then all of a sudden it went back in his tail hole. Now he is fighting me and even started walking. He is now opening his mounth and I am feeding him a little at a time. Any thoughts. I have had turtles my whole life and never experienced anything like this? When his boy stuff was coming out he was like kind of freaking out. Looked like he was pushing and struggeling. Could this have been the whole problem?

OK, I'm not sure I'm following everything that is going on, but it can be some RI, it could also be some other bacterial infection. Are there any visible symptoms? I would make sure the water is around 80-82 degrees and the basking area is 95. Get him some UVB light as well, as much as possible.

Never feed a RES spinach - it prevents the absorption of calcium. If whatever came out went back in, I would not worry about it, its normal. It could have been rproductive organs, it could have been intestines (usually the colon).

I have seen one of my turtles do that, I can tell you for sure, your girl is a boy :D, as long as it goes back in by itself, there should be no problem, if it can't, you should keep it wet and see a vet to help it go back in. :D

If the turtle is weak, I'd keep him in shallower so he doesn't have to expend much energy. I'd have the water 81-82 F and the basking area about 90 -81F.
